How to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer — Simple Care Tips That Actually Work

You’ve just received a beautiful bouquet — and you want it to stay fresh as long as possible. The good news is that with the right care, fresh flowers can last anywhere from 7 to 14 days. Here are a few simple rules that make a real difference.

Trim the stems first. As soon as you bring your bouquet home, cut the stems at a 45-degree angle — ideally underwater or right before placing them in the vase. The angled cut increases the surface area for water absorption and keeps your flowers drinking properly.

Change the water regularly. Fresh water every 1–2 days is one of the most important things you can do. Add a small amount of sugar (one teaspoon per litre) to the water as a natural food source. Many bouquets come with a small sachet of flower food — use it.

Find the right spot. Flowers don’t like direct sunlight, heaters, or drafts. A cool corner of the room is ideal. At night, moving the vase somewhere cooler can significantly extend the life of your arrangement.

Remove wilting flowers immediately. Dying blooms release ethylene gas, which speeds up the wilting of the flowers around them. Remove them as soon as you notice them fading.

A few notes on specific flowers: peonies and ranunculus love cool conditions. Lilies open faster in warmth — keep them cool if you want to slow the process. Gypsophila and statice are among the longest-lasting flowers and can dry beautifully right in the vase.

Flowers made with love deserve a little care in return. ?
